The NEVI Fast-Charging Program Is Back On — And Now It's Built for Speed
After a 2025 funding freeze stalled the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, a court order pushed the money back out the door. For fiscal year 2026 the Federal Highway Administration has apportioned roughly $885 million to states to build out the DC fast-charging backbone along highway corridors — even after a separate $500 million cut to the program was signed into law on February 2, 2026.
The reboot came with new interim guidance that trades red tape for velocity. States now get more flexibility: consolidated solicitations that bundle sites into single, faster procurements; permission to place chargers beyond the interstate corridors that were previously mandatory; and explicit room for medium- and heavy-duty charging. Roughly nine states reopened their funding rounds first, with about a dozen more expected to follow in the same quarter.

Federally funded NEVI sites still carry hard reliability and uptime standards, so the goal isn't just more plugs — it's plugs that actually work when you pull in. Reliability is finally being written into the rules, not just the marketing. The federal minimum standards behind the revived NEVI program require every funded charging port to be operational at least 97% of the year, and they define "operational" strictly: the hardware and software both have to be online and the port has to dispense power at its rated level. Scheduled maintenance, vandalism, and natural disasters are carved out of the math, but a frozen screen, a stuck payment terminal, or a failed handshake with your car all count as downtime. For drivers, that is the difference between a charging stop you can plan a road trip around and a gamble.
